Quel âge avais-tu quand tu a commencé à chanter ? Qu’est-ce qui t’as conduit vers ce poste ?

J’ai commencé le chant assez tard, dans mes projets précédents je jouais toujours de la guitare. Je n’avais jamais considéré la possibilité de chanter. Puis lorsque j’ai eu 21 ans, j’ai décidé que j’avais envie de créer un groupe de screamo/hardcore, mais là où je vis c’est très dur de trouver des gens capables de chanter dans ce style. Tu connais le dicton « si tu veux que quelque chose soit fait, fait le toi même », et bien voilà, j’ai appris à le faire moi même.

Qu’est-ce que tu aimes le plus dans le scream ?

Et bien, je pense que c’est une manière incroyable de faire le vide. Le mot en lui même ne l’insinue-t-il pas ? Mais ce que j’aime le plus c’est la colère mélangé à l’excitation que ce type de chant apporte.

L’écriture des paroles découle du chant, écris-tu tes propres textes ? Vous préférez créer des histoires ou parler de quelque chose de plus conceptuel ?

Je ne les écris pas toujours. C’est souvent Marco Mantovani (lead guitarist) et moi même qui écrivons. La manière d’écrire et les sujets que nous choisissons changent en fonction du morceau, cela dépend des images que la musique crée dans notre esprit. Parfois on aime raconter des histoires vraies, parfois on aime parler de choses plus banales et abstraites, pour que les gens puissent leur donner leur propre interprétation.

Comment choisissez vous les titres de vos morceaux ? (les plus amusant comme “Call me Sick Boy” ou “Sydney Shown” par exemple)

Parfois les titres viennent naturellement et expliquent en fait ce que l’on chante, mais parfois on choisit un titre qui n’a d’apparence aucun lien avec le contenu des textes. Comme pour les deux que tu as mentionné par exemple, ils sont tirés de répliques de films, mais si tu regardes les paroles il n’y a aucune connexion entre eux.

Quand vous écrivez les paroles, vous savez déjà quelle partie sera criée et quelle partie sera chantée ou est-ce que cela vient en répétant ?

Oui cela vient directement lorsque nous écrivons, on sait tout de suite quelle partie sera clean et quelle partie sera en scream. On a un genre de schéma fixe pour les morceaux, mais parfois on le change de manière inattendu. C’est une question de goût.

Quels sont les chanteurs que tu apprécies le plus ?

Définitivement Kurt Cobain.

Y a-t-il un chanteur qui vous rend envieux?

Non, je suis plutôt sûr de moi et je ne suis jaloux de personne. Les bons chanteurs me donnent de la motivation pour que je m’améliore. Donc j’essaie de comprendre leurs secrets et j’essaie de les utiliser pour devenir meilleur.

Quel frontman vous a le plus impressionné sur scène ?

Je ne sais pas trop. Il y a beaucoup de très bons frontmen dehors, j’en ai rencontré beaucoup mais je ne peux pas te dire qui est le meilleur, parce que chacun d’entre eux a quelque chose qui les rend spéciaux aux yeux de leurs fans. Je pourrai te dire Corey Taylor par exemple. Mais il y en a des tonnes d’autres….c’est un choix difficile.

Puisque tu n’es pas le premier chanteur du groupe, comment as-tu appréhendé les anciens morceaux ?

C’était assez simple en fait. J’écoutais déjà Hopes Die Last avant d’être dans le groupe, donc ça n’a pas été très dur d’apprendre les morceaux et de les interpréter de mon mieux.

Aimerais-tu parfois chanter comme Becko et vice versa ?

Bien sûr, notre rêve serait d’avoir exactement les mêmes voix, de cette manière les gens ne seraient pas capable de dire qui chante quand.

Sur chaque album vous gardez un morceau style acoustique sur lequel Becko chante seul, tu n’as jamais eu envie de faire la même chose avec uniquement du chant crié ?

C’est exactement ce dont on a parlé pendant que l’on écrivait pour l’album à venir. Il y aura des surprises les gars !!!

Quel est ton morceau préféré, celui où tu te sens à ton paroxysme ?

« Unleash Hell » c’est sûr.

Donnes tu un traitement spécial à ta voix avant les concerts ? Quel est ton pire souvenir ?

Non je ne donne pas de traitement particulier avant un concert, ça paraît hasardeux mais je préfère boire quelques bières ou quelque chose de plus fort et voilà tout. On se prépare comme ça, pas de traitements/méditations/prières chiantes et autres conneries de la sorte

Pour ce qui est du pire souvenir, je me souviens des trente secondes de pure terreur et de frissons le long de la colonne vertébrale lorsque une fois nous avons trouvez notre van (avec tous les instruments à l’intérieur) complètement vandalisé à Glasgow. Ensuite on a regardé à l’intérieur et aucune de nos affaires n’avait été touchée. Je n’arrive toujours pas à y croire. Mais c’était abominable de se lever le matin et de voir ça.

Quels conseils donnerais-tu aux gens qui veulent s’aventurer comme frontman ?

Tout simplement ce que je me suis dit lorsque j’ai démarré : tu as besoin de dévotion, de croire en toi, de croire de manière inconditionnelle en ton objectif et aussi d’un peu de chance.

Pour finir, avec toutes vos tournées, as-tu une anecdote sympa sur un groupe ou un frontman célèbre ?

Bien sûr, mais quelques lignes ne rendront pas justice à ces moments. Je ne peux pas vraiment raconter ce genre de chose parce que ça pourrait ne pas avoir l’air d’être drôle alors que ça l’était vraiment.

How old were you when you first start singing ? What led you to the frontman career ?

I started singing late, in my previous projects I’ve always played the guitar. I’ve never considered the possibility of singing. Then when I was 21 years old, I decided I wanted to start a screamo/hardcore band, but where I live it is very hard to find someone able to sing like that. So you know the saying “If you want something done, do it yourself” and here it is: I’ve learned how to do it by myself.

What is the thing you like the most about screaming ?

Well, I think it’s an amazing way to vent. Doesn’t the word itself imply it? But what I like the most is the anger mixed up with excitement that this way of sing brings with it.

The writing of the words comes along, do you write your own texts ? Do you like writing stories or are more conceptual words ?

Not always. Usually it’s me and Marco Mantovani (our lead-guitarrist) writing lyrics. How we usually write or the subject we choose change from song to song, depending on the images that music suggests our mind. Sometimes we like to tell true stories, sometimes we like to talk about random and abstract things, so people have the opportunity to give them their own personal interpretation.

How do you chose the titles of your songs ? (the most funny ones like « Call Me Sick Boy » or « Syndney Shown » for example)

Sometimes titles come out naturally and they really explain what we actually sing in the lyrics, sometimes we choose a title which has no apparent link with the content of the text. Like the two songs you’ve mentioned for example, the titles were taken from two famous movies , but if you listen to the lyrics there’s no connection with them.

When you write a song, do you know while you’re writing it which part is gonna be scream or clean or does it come naturally in practice ?

Yes it comes naturally, when we write a song, we already know which part will be scream and which one will be clean. We follow a sort of fixed scheme, but we can also change it in an unexpected way. It’s a matter of taste.

Who are the vocalists you like the most ?

Definitely Kurt Cobain.

Is there a singer who makes you jealous ?

No, I am pretty confident with myself and I am not jealous of anybody. Good singers give me the motivation to improve myself. So I try to understand which are their secrets and I try to make them mine in order to get better.

Which frontman impressed you the most on stage ?

I don’t know. There are a lot of great frontmen out there, I’ve met a lot of them but I can’t tell you who is the best one, because each of them has something that make them special in the eyes of their fans. I could name Corey Taylor for example. But there are tons of others…It’s a hard choice.

Since you are not the first singer of your band, how did you apprehend singing the old songs ?

It’s been actually simple. I used to listen to Hopes Die Last before being in the band, so it hasn’t been very hard to learn the songs and perform them at best.

Do you sometimes wish you had a clean voice like Becko and vice versa ?

Sure, our dream is to make our voices sound alike in order that people won’t recognize the difference.

You always keep in the records like an acoustic song on which only Becko is singing, you never wanted to do the same with only screams ?

This is exactly what we’ve talked about during the writing of the upcoming album. There will be surprises guys!!!

Which song of yours is your favorite, the one you feel you’re at your best ?

Unleash Hell, definitely.

Do you perform a special treatment for your voice before shows ? What is you worst memory on tour ?

No, I don’t perform any kind of treatment before the show, it might be hazardous, but I prefer to drink a few beers or something strong and that’s it. We get ready like this, no boring treatments/meditation/prayers and and shit like that (:

As regards the worst memory, I remember the 30 seconds of pure terror and shivers along our spines, when we once found our van (with all our instruments inside) completely burglarized in Glasgow. Then we’ve looked inside, and all our things were left untouched. It’s still so unbelievable. But it’s been awful to wake up in the morning like that.

What kind of advice could you give to young people who wishes to be singers ?

Simply what I’ve said to myself when I started: you need devotion, believe in yourself , believe in your aim unconditionally and you also need a bit of luck too.

Finally, with all the touring you’ve done and all the bands you met, do you have some funny anecdotes about a famous frontman ?

Sure, but a few lines won’t do justice to those moments. I can’t really explain certain funny moments, because they might not sound funny at all if I try to tell you how funny they actually were (:
