Salut les Set Your Goals, on est très content d’avoir l’opportunité de vous interviewer. Burning At Both Ends, votre dernier album studio est sorti en Juin dernier, en l’écoutant maintenant, que pensez-vous des morceaux qui le composent ? Sonnent-ils différemment ?

Je suis tout aussi fier de cet album aujourd’hui que je l’étais quand il est sorti. Beaucoup de ces morceaux sont encore frais pour moi parce qu’il y en a quelques-uns que nous n’avions pas joué avant la tournée que nous faisons en ce moment. C’est plutôt excitant de pouvoir les jouer en live

En quoi cet album est-il différent de Mutiny! et This Will Be The Death Of Us selon toi ?

BABE a un son beaucoup plus consistant que TWBTDOU selon moi. Il est également mieux formulé que Munity ! En terme de structure de morceau. J’ai le sentiment que nous sommes devenus bien meilleurs en terme d’écriture au fil du temps.

Personnellement je pense que Burning At Both Ends est plus optimiste que ce que This Will Be The Death Of Us l’était. J’ai l’impression que le dernier était plus sombre, vous ressentez la même chose ? Est-ce que vous avez ressenti une différence en enregistrant ?

Je suis d’accord. Pourtant l’enregistrement de BABE était beaucoup plus chaotique que pour nos précédents opus, mais le produit fini ne reflète pas ce chaos. Je pense qu’il est un album plus apaisé que TWBTDOU dans son entièreté.

Quelle est la signification de l’artwork de l’album ? Vous avez été sur les routes pendant pas mal de temps et avez visité pas mal de pays, est-ce que ça représente l’une des situations dans laquelle vous vous êtes retrouvés ?

Être coincé sur le bord de la route à cause d’un problème sur le van est une situation dans laquelle nous nous sommes retrouvés un nombre incalculable de fois. L’artwork était fait pour coller avec le titre de l’album. La vie au jour le jour, voyager et avoir à faire à une série de malchance qui semble ne jamais s’arrêter, tout ça est très épuisant. Néanmoins on continue d’aller de l’avant, surpasser l’adversité de n’importe quelle manière. Sur le dos de la pochette il y a une image de nous disant juste « screw it, let’s walk ». L’artwork était une manière de rendre hommage à notre courage en tant que groupe.

Après avoir traversé le monde, est-ce que jouer « à la maison » à une saveur spécifique ?

Carrément. Même si on a eu de plus gros concerts dans d’autres villes, il y a un sentiment spécial à jouer chez soi qui n’est pas comparable aux autres. Le seul sentiment assimilable que je puisse trouver est une fête d’anniversaire : débordé et au centre de toute l’attention, entouré des gens qui comptent pour vous et pour qui vous comptez.

Vous avez enregistré des nouvelles compos avec Chad (New Found Glory) récemment, à quoi doit-on s’attendre ? On sait que vous êtes amis depuis pas mal de temps maintenant !

Yep ! On a enregistré deux morceaux avec Chad à Orange County juste avant d’embarquer pour notre tournée. Ils devraient être disponibles sur iTunes dans une semaine ou deux. On est très excités à l’idée de sortir ces nouveaux morceaux, c’est un peu différent de BABE mais d’une bonne manière. L’influence de Chad sur leur rendement est apparente, je pense que les auditeurs vont les apprécier.

Si Set Your Goals se mettait à porter des masques pour devenir les International Superheroes of Hardcore (ISHC), quel membre du groupe serait « Captain Straight Edge », Sgt. Soy », « Mr. Mosh », Shugga Shugga » et « The Amazing, Breakdown » ? Et quel pseudo choisirait le 6ème membre ?

Je ne suis pas vraiment familier avec chaque personnage de l’ISHC donc je dirais que Junior serait probablement « Captain sXe ». Jordan serait « Mr.Mosh », Dan serait « Chugga Chugga », Mikey serait « The Amazing Breakdown » mais personne ne serait « Sgt.Soy » puisque plus personne n’est végétarien dans notre groupe maintenant ! Dans ce cas, je suppose que Joe et moi-même (les anciens végétariens) seraient les « Fish-Eating Fighters » ou quelque chose du genre ? ahaha

Vous allez bientôt tourner en Europe avec Every Time I Die, qu’est-ce ça vous fait de tourner avec ces gars-là ? Quel est votre album favoris d’Every Time I Die ?

On est super excités de tourner avec des amis de longues dates et un tel groupe de mécréants plus connu sous le nom d’Every Time I Die. Mon album préféré serait The Burial Plot Bidding War.

On apprécie vraiment que vous preniez le temps de répondre à nos questions, on se verra bientôt à Paris ! Comment vous sentez-vous à l’idée de revenir dans cette ville ? Est-ce que Paris a une place spéciale dans votre cœur ?

J’adore Paris. La première fois que je l’ai visité j’étais avec ma famille, j’avais 11ans, je pense que c’est vraiment une ville magnifique chargée de culture. J’ai également passé pratiquement un mois là-bas quand je faisais le tour de l’Europe à 18 ans, donc j’ai appris à connaître et à apprécier la ville au fil du temps, ce qui me donne envie de revenir vite. Hi there Set Your Goals, we are really happy to get the opportunity to interview you !

Burning At Both Ends, your last studio album was released last june. When you look back on this album, what do you think of the songs now ? Do they sound different ?

I’m still very proud of this record as I was then. Many of the songs are still fresh to me because we haven’t played some of them before the tour we’re on right now and it’s exciting to be playing them in a live setting.

How does it differ from Mutiny! and This Will Be The Death Of Us from your point of view ?

BABE is a much more consistent sounding record than TWBTDOU, in my opinion. It’s also more formulaic than « Mutiny! » in terms of song structures. We’ve gotten a lot better at songwriting over time I feel.

I personally feel like Burning At Both Ends is more upbeat than what This Will Be The Death of Us was. I feel like the ladder has a darker feeling. Is it the same for you ? Was the feeling different while in studio ?

I agree. Though recording BABE was a far more hellish time in the studio than any of our past recording sessions, the final product does not reflect this. I feel it’s a much more light-spirited record than TWBTDOU as a whole.

What is the meaning behind the album’s artwork ? You have been on the road for a long time as a band a visited a lot of countries, does it represent one of the situations you’ve been through ?

Being stranded on the side of the road with van troubles is a situation we’ve dealt with a countless number of times. The album artwork was meant to go hand in hand with the title. The day-to-day lifestyle we live, traveling and dealing with what can sometimes feel like an endless streak of bad luck can be a very trying experience. Nevertheless, we continue to forge ahead and make due through adversity by any means possible. On the back cover is an image of us just saying, « screw it, let’s walk. » The album artwork was meant to be a testament to our fortitude as a group.

After traveling the world like you do, does playing at home hold a special feeling for you ?

Definitely. Though we’ve had bigger shows in other cities, there’s a feeling you get from playing a hometown show that’s unlike any other. The only other feeling I can really compare it to is that of having a birthday party: overwhelmed and at the center of attention surrounded by those you care about and who care about you all at once.

You have been recording stuff with Chad (New Found Glory) lately, what can we expect ? We know he has been friend with you guys for a long time now !

Yep! We did two songs with Chad in Orange County right before this tour we’re on right now. They should be up on iTunes in a week or two. We’re very excited to release these songs to the world. They’re a little different than BABE but in a very good way, and Chad’s influence on their sound is apparent. I think listeners will enjoy them

If Set Your Goals started wearing masks and become International Heroes of Hardcore, which member of the band would play the role of « Captain Straight Edge », Sgt. Soy », « Mr. Mosh », Shugga Shugga » and « The Amazing, Breakdown » ? And what pseudo would the 6th choose ?

I’m not super familiar with each character from the ISHC so it’s tough to say. Junior would probably be « Captain sXe » though. Jordan would be « Mr. Mosh, » Dan would be « Chugga Chugga, » Mikey would be « The Amazing Breakdown, » And nobody would be « Sgt. Soy » since nobody in our band is vegetarian anymore! In that case, I guess then Joe and myself (the ex-vegetarians) would be the « Fish-Eating Fighters » or something? Hahaha.

You will be touring Europe with Every Time I Die soon, how does it feel to know that you’ll be touring with these folks ? And what would you say is your favorite Every Time I Die album ?

We’re very excited to be touring with longtime friends and such a great group of miscreants known as Every Time I Die. My favorite record of theirs is « The Burial Plot Bidding War »

We really appreciate that you took the time to answer our questions, see you soon in Paris ! How do you feel about getting back in this city ? Does Paris hold a special meaning for you ?

I love Paris. I first visited when I was 11 years old with my family and I think it’s truly a beautiful city with loads of culture. I spent almost a month in Paris when I was backpacking across Europe at 18 as well so I’ve become more acquainted with (and grown an affinity for) the city over time and I am eager to return.
